“Death To Israel” Rally in Salt Lake City

Filed under:D. Sirmize, Guest, Media, Politics, Religion, Web Log (Blog) — posted by D. Sirmize on August 30, 2006 @ 12:19 pm    Print Post

[UPDATE: I moved the concluding text of this post to before the Ant-Bush protest photos, so as to better distinguish between the two separate protests.]

Just back from diversity training at the Salt Lake City anti Bush/Jews/Sanity protests staged to oppose President Bush’s arrival here to speak at the American Legion convention. Angry Left starlet Cindy Sheehan was supposed to be here, but due to a recent surgery she couldn’t make it. Man, am I bummed. Rumor has it they may have her call in and broadcast her message to the crowd. Unfortunately, unlike most of the protesters, I have a job to get back to.

The Salt Lake City/Country Building is Mayor Rocky Anderson’s castle, and leftwing demonstrations there are commonplace. Rocky’s rallies are a dime a dozen, we were more interested in the much publicized “Death to Israel” rally.

Organizer Robert Breeze told the Salt Lake Tribune that the purpose of the rally is to protest “the torture and murder inflicted on Muslims by Israel and the penetration of the U.S. media by Israeli intelligence.” Those barberic Israelis! Excuse me, Mr. Breeze, but last time I checked, it wasn’t Israelis who cut off heads, kidnap journalists, hide amongst human shields, and bash babies’ heads in with rifle butts.

The rally was actually quite a disappointment. The rag-tag group of protesters was set up across the street from the main demonstration. I thought I’d get upset, but I ended up mostly laughing. Breeze himself looks like a creepy grandpa you wouldn’t want to leave your kids with, and his followers look like average street beggars. Tyler snapped some pictures. Breeze is on the right in this shot:

I had a brief conversation with him:

D. Sirmize: What’s your name, sir?

PROTESTER: Robert Breeze- Breeze like the wind.

D. Sirmize: So this is a “Death To Israel” rally. I’m Jewish. Do you want me dead?

BREEZE (LIKE THE WIND): No, no.

2ND PROTESTER: There’s a difference between Zionism and Jews.

D. Sirmize: Well you say “Death to Israel.” I would think that implies death to Jews.

BREEZE (LIKE THE WIND): Well you’d probably be wrong.

D. Sirmize: Probably?

BREEZE (LIKE THE WIND): Do you see “Death to Israel” on any of our signs?

D. Sirmize: I haven’t read any of your signs. But you applied for a demonstration permit under the title “Death to Israel.” It doesn’t need to be on your signs, it’s on your permit!

2ND PROTESTER (to Breeze): You signed us up as “Death To Israel?”

BREEZE (LIKE THE WIND): Look, if I said “Death to Whales,” would you take that to mean I want to kill whales?

D. Sirmize: Uh, yeah.

This lady says she herself is a Jew. Interesting.

I found it amazing that all the local news agencies reported on a “Death to Israel” rally so matter-of-factly. Other than over at Michelle Malkin’s place, no detectable outrage anywhere. When exactly did anti-semitism become culturally acceptable?

Below are some of Tyler’s shots of the main anti-Bush demonstration (not affiliated with the Death to Israel rally):

Notice the nazi thunder/lightening bolts in ‘Bush’

Rocky Anderson: The man of the hour

Holy Bucket Brigades

Guys have uteri? I need a checkup!

Just in case you forgot your protest sign

This guy has spoken his peace and he’s blowing this joint.

  1. From now on SLC should be known as the home of the “Death to Israel” ralley. Utah tourism officials should appreciate that. This is the place.

  2. Can anyone say ‘take SLC off of the places you will ever visit’. I think there is a bypass around the city to avoid several thousand people that are infected with the dangerous mental disorder, BDS/CDS. I was once a frequent visitor, why i’ll never know, maybe it was the suicide landings and the streight up takeoffs.

  3. This is why the mega-moonbat crowd is so useful to Republicans.

More often than not, the result of these sickening demonstrations is that voters with functioning cerebrums run the other way and their guys lose. But instead of learning from the loss, they convince themselves it happened because they didn’t do ENOUGH of these demonstrations and, like Charlie Brown with the football, keep doing it again and again.

I have a book coming out next week, “The Hopelessly Partisan Guide To American Politics”, which I co-wrote with Barry Sinrod. I laugh at how much self-inflicted damage they cause while Barry seems to think they’re invaluable to the Democratic party. You, of course, can draw your own conclusions.

  4. Scrapiron- Don’t let Salt Lake City’s moonbats keep you from visiting our fair state. True, SLC’s population is decidedly left-wing. But remember that Utah is the reddest state in the Union. Plus we’ve got the best variety of outdoor activity choices imaginable. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Ok, I would live in Hawaii.

  5. Somebody better tell the bucket brigade their time would be better spent learning which end of a M-16 is the business end. Then they might be able to back up their empty threats. No wonder the leftist wackos want our guns.

  6. Um, wow. I am surprised and yet… not. Rocky Anderson has been an embarassment to the state ever since he took office. Don’t let the nutjobs that dreamed this rally up prevent you from visiting a great place.

  8. Hi, I don’t know much about how it is in America as far as your views on the conflict in the middle east goes, however, I would like to say that some of you seem to have no idea about the atrocities committed by both Muslims and Jews in this region. You seem to have very little awareness of what is going on over there and if you had, you wouldn’t be so glib with the comments you make. Protesting and calling the protest “Death to Israel” is stupid and unfair, I completely agree, but is it not also clear that calling people that you obviously haven’t listened to, or know anything about, “moonbats”, “nutjobs” or “greasy pieces of sh*%” is also insanity- it seems that people who were at the rally were ill-informed of the name of the protest. There are more than two sides to every story and you people seem as quick to judge as Mr.Breeze. I hope you are proud of yourselves. Just because some people go to extremes doesn’t mean everyone should go to an extreme, and you seem unable to grasp that. I apologise profusely if i have misinterpreted any of your points or offended you with my opinion, it’s just i expected a more intelligent presentation of both the article and the responses on such a sensitive issue.

  9. Incidentally, that giant papier-mache puppet of President Bush was at the rally last year.

Oh, and there were plenty of people who confused the Mercedes symbol and the peace sign.

My pictures of the rally are here:

  10. First of all, I love how so many of you right-wing bloggers love to imply that those who were protesting don’t have jobs. The rally at Washington Square (Not the “Death to Israel” rally, which had nothing to do with the one at City Hall, in fact if you found one person at the City Hall rally who wasn’t appalled by the “Death to Israel” rally, I would be surprised, but go ahead and focus on the group that doesn’t challenge your position or anyone’s intelligence).
Where was I? Oh yeah, the rally was held during lunch and many used their lunch breaks to attend. The place was crawling with business attire and cell phones (Not that you would show your readers pictures of those people, though I have some, if you’d like). Some of us who protested even have jobs with vacation time. (Gasp! I know it’s hard for you people to stomach liberals having jobs, but I’m sorry to say it’s true).
All that aside, you leave a very important group out of your argument when you refer to all those who protested as “moonbats” or whatever…yes, we’re all crazy 15 year olds with bucket drums, tell yourself that if it makes you feel better…but, what about the hundreds of veterans in attendance?

  11. To be fair, the Rocky-Fest and the Death to Israel rally were two separate events and the Rocky people were quick to distance themselves from the Breeze ;) people;). But also to be fair the nazi symbols were aplenty on the Rocky side too.

  12. I hear Rocky had his hybrid all rigged up for a car/suicide bomb run, but was convinced by followers to call it off because the explosion could possibly contribute to “Global Warming”.

  13. Where is the “Death to Israel” sign? I don’t see it.

    Comment by Elizabeth — August 31, 2006 @ 4:36 pm

  14. Elizabeth- If Robert Breeze were to have actually had a sign that read “Death to Israel,” 1) do you think he could have suckered even Utah’s homeless into holding them? 2) Would he not have had the crap kicked out of him?

Do the signs need to say “Death to Israel” to be offensive? Seems to me they were pretty offensive as they were. The permit said “Death to Israel.” That’s what the dude wanted his group to be called.

Poking around your blog, I think it’s safe to say you’re not too big a fan of Israel yourself. Too bad you couldn’t have been out here standing with Breeze and his band of bums. It would have definately made things more interesting for Tyler and I.

  15. Elizabeth: After perusing your website (a waste of 5 minutes of my life that I cannot have back) I can honestly say that you are so typical of all the left wing drones who live in my city (yes I am a New Yorker too). In a perfect world instead of sipping latte at Starbucks you would be living in Khartoum amongst the Islamofascists you so fervently admire.

  16. Tracy said, “The place was crawling with business attire and cell phones”

Do you know how assanine that sounds? The fact that you have a cell phone and own a pair of Dockers does not excluded you from Moonbatism.

  17. hey! i’d just like to say that almost all of us were not with the “death to israel” people. I had no idea that any of that type of thing would be present at this. (I really don’t know much about that whole conflict. I know, I should learn more about current events. I am sorry.) But, I’d just like to clear our names. We (the people in all black with the rad signs, shopping cart and buckets) weren’t with those people. If your gonna dislike us, you might as well do it for the right reasons.

    Comment by Rob Banks — September 5, 2006 @ 1:03 am

  18. Hey Rob- I really should have posted the pics of the main anti-Bush protest on a separate post than the “Death to Israel” rally. The main subject of my post was that protest. The pictures of the anti-Bush protest were simply a side note to that. I didn’t think they would take off like they did. I didn’t have a problem including them:

    1) because all of the different protests were sparked by a common event (Bush’s visit). If you follow protest coverage in the news, you will see that differing protests with a common location and date are tend to be covered in the same story.

    2) I made a clear distinction between the protests.

I’ve clarified this matter enough. If people associate your group with the Death to Israel “group”, that is their problem. You can only idiot-proof your blog so much, know what I mean? Anybody with half a brain understands that the anti-Bush demonstration was not affiliated with the lone ranger across the street.

Your signs were indeed rad.  And I think the handkerchief “outlaw” look was very effective.  Still not quite sure what you stand for (specifically, how the words ‘anarchy’ and ‘peace’ can be used in the same sentence), but you made an impression.  I do have a suggestion for you though- as long as you’re sporting the black outfits, use a different color sidewalk chalk other than pink to scrawl out your messages.  Come on, Pink?  Black chalk would have been much more effective.

As a political junkie, I understand the Israel-RestoftheWorld conflict very well. I also understand the reasons behind the anti-Bush protest. Rest assured, I dislike you for the correct reasons;)

  19. it is obvious that the anti israeli spy protestors are true patriotic americans. I hope everyone will google: “mighty wurlitzer” +cia and help identify the traitors running our media for israel.

  20. You misunderstand opposition to Israel. Israel is a theocracy that bases citizenship and citizen rights upon religion. It excludes a majority of people under it’s control the right to vote and has built walls around their cities with only one way in and out, sound familiar? Like the warsaw ghetto, these walls block the citizens within from reaching their property, families, and businesses. Israel kills civilians frequently. Almost a hundred times more often than any Palestinian kills a Israeli. They were given someone elses land by the UN in the 1950s, but then refuse to accept any other ruling by the UN in regard to how they are treating those peoples. They are trying to wipe out the Palestinian people’s cultural and environmental identity. That is genocide. Look up the definition. Jews created that word and definitition. Now they should realize that the country that claims to be of their people is committing genocide. Israel is a fascist state. If Israeli jews cannot accept the right of their fellow people to have equal rights to vote and move then they have no right to have a country, and I would say, “Death to Israel.”

  21. …death to Israel could also mean a politically gained ,peaceful dissolution of the monstrous terroristic state of Israel ,however improbable it may seem. The western world created the monster the western world can undo it. Any truly honest person can see that the creation of Israel was a most malicious act of terrorism no true peace can be gained in the world unless this monstrocity is undone…..let D .Sirmize ask me his questions…

    Comment by waris faridi — January 11, 2008 @ 6:19 am

  22. Oh, I totally see how the phrase “death to…” could mean a peaceful dissolution. Who doesn’t use the words “death” and “peace” in the same sentence all the time? I mean, the Palestinians are such peace-loving people (forget the missiles, the suicide bombers, the kidnappings). I’m sure the Islamic World is all about the peaceful (wink, wink) dissolution of the monster that is Israel. What kind of hatemongering Islamophobe would dare think otherwise?

Seriously, though, my holistic friend- I don’t need to ask you my questions. I’ve read all your answers, and they’re the same old run-of-the-mill tripe I see every day from the anti-Israel crowd.

-Sincerely, your warmongering, evil, Great Satan, infidel friend, D. Sirmize

  23. Hey, I'll kick your ass if Breeze won't. I'm sick of Jew lies and defamatory name-calling–the debate is OVER! Death to Israel, Free America!

  24. I think we should launch a pre emptive strike on ISRAEL! But make sure that Traitor Clinton is over there to! It is time to see who the real criminals are! Americans were when the stole the Indians country and now the Israelis are as they continue to steal the arabs land! I grew up in America and had many freinds who are Jews. They ALL say that the Israeli government is criminal and should give all that land back with Financial restitution! That Government is guilty of so many crimes (perhaps even 911) as all the real evidence has shown!! Remember Building #7! The "Commission" dindt! PEACE!
